UKM Mapagama (Mahasiswa Pencinta Alam Gadjah Mada), UGM’s Nature Lovers Student Club, has successfully completed the Final Field Activity of Gladimadya Rock Climbing 2026, titled “Sancara Dhairya Shila”, at Tebing Songan, Kintamani, Bali, which took place over seven days from August 13 to 19, 2026. The activity was participated in by five members: Aurell Satrianitto P. (Vocational School 2025), Haidar Ali (Engineering 2025), Alisya Nailah (Engineering 2025), Bagas Firiyadi (Agriculture 2025), and Sakhiya Devina Anwar (Forestry 2025), with Absharin Fatiha Zaira (Vocational School 2022) and Luqman Hasan (Vocational School 2023) serving as field supervisors. The series of activities aimed to apply the competencies in terrain orientation, cliff topography, sport climbing single pitch, and multipitch that the participants had acquired throughout their education process. Tebing Songan reaches a height of up to 80 meters, characterized by andesite rock and a diverse range of route difficulty levels spanning from grade 4a to 8a.
The team began the activity by conducting terrain orientation and collecting topographic data of Tebing Songan. The data collection process involved identifying the characteristics of the terrain and the climbing routes across several cliff blocks. Through this process, the team successfully identified 30 climbing routes, which will subsequently be mapped in the compilation of a cliff topography document as one of the outputs of the activity. Following the terrain orientation, the team proceeded to climb across several cliff blocks by applying sport climbing single pitch and multipitch techniques. In execution, the team employed a range of climbing methods and techniques, including lead climbing, trad climbing, top rope, fix rope installation, ascending, descending, belaying, and route cleaning, with the division of tasks adjusted to meet both the demands of the climb and safety requirements. The climbing activities were also accompanied by vertical documentation to record the process and activities of the team during their time on the cliff face.
One of the key challenges throughout the activity was managing the division of time and responsibilities amid a series of simultaneous climbing activities spread across several cliff blocks. This situation demanded strong communication and coordination among team members to ensure that climbing targets, documentation, and terrain data collection could proceed concurrently. The team’s ability to respond to these challenges reflects the managerial maturity and field readiness that lie at the core of what Gladimadya, as an advanced education program for young Mapagama members, is designed to develop.
The Final Field Activity of Gladimadya Rock Climbing 2026 “Sancara Dhairya Shila” forms part of the advanced education program through which young Mapagama members work toward full membership. Through this activity, members not only tested their technical rock climbing abilities, but also revisited and reinforced the competencies acquired throughout their education while developing managerial, communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills in a real field environment. The achievement of identifying and mapping 30 climbing routes at Tebing Songan stands as concrete evidence that this activity was more than an individual skills test, it also produced a documentary contribution of value to the broader rock climbing community.
